What is ILIAS?

How can I use ILIAS and navigate through it?

As stated before, to use ILIAS you only need an internet connection and a recent version of your browser (Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera, Internet Explorer). For using the learning and teaching materials provided within the scope of project LIB(e)RO you do not need to register. You will be able to freely access all materials from all end devices and at all times.

LIB(e)RO platform starting page

You will start your journey within LIB(e)RO and ILIAS on the LIB(e)RO starting page, the link to which can be found on our website (http://libero.uni-passau.de). On the starting page you will find your entry points to all learning and teaching materials as well as the most recent information on how to use and navigate through LIB(e)RO.

From the LIB(e)RO starting page in ILIAS both parts of the e-learning platform can be accessed: the part for learners as well as the part for librarians and social workers. Within both parts, you will then be given an overview of all available subjects. The subjects themselves are arranged in the so-called ILIAS learning modules (green icons). They are all listed one below the other. You will find a short description of each learning module as well as further links related to each subject.

Each subject within LIB(e)RO is organised in a so-called ILIAS learning module (green icons): Within each learning module you can find chapters, sub-chapters and pages, which all help to further structure the subjects. On the pages of the learning modules, you will be able to find different contents, for example texts, audio and video files and images or figures supporting the texts. On some pages of the learning modules, you will find test questions which will help you to check whether you understood the texts. Within the learning modules, you can either navigate via the navigation menu on the left hand side, which shows you all the available chapters and pages. Or – if you want to make your way through page after page – you can use the arrows on the pages of the learning module to move forward and backward.

See the next question "How can I navigate through LIB(e)RO?" for more information.

The navigation within LIB(e)RO is sometimes referred to as “bread crumbs navigation”: Within ILIAS and the LIB(e)RO learning platform, you can always tell where you are by “following the bread crumbs” on top of the page. Here, you can see not only on which level or in which learning module you are currently working, but also which levels are located above that. From here, you can also access all the different levels on your path by clicking on them.

Within the learning modules, you can navigate with the help of the navigation on the left hand side. This navigation shows you all the chapters and pages available within the learning module. You can access all contents which seem interesting to you and do not have to stick to a certain order. However, if you want, you can make your way through the learning module page after page and use the arrows on the pages of the learning module to move forward and backward.

ILIAS language settings in right upper corner

All of the contents on the LIB(e)RO learning platform are available in three different languages: English, German and Greek. You can change the language settings in the right upper corner: If you click on the small arrow next to the “Sprache” button, you will be able to select the language of your choosing and access the contents in that language.
