Snowden Case:

Edward Snowden, a former American intelligence contractor became a whistleblower, exposing NSA data-collection programs in 2013. Facing U.S. charges, he fled to Hong Kong and then to Russia. After his temporary asylum ended in 2014, Russia granted him a three-year stay permit, later extended to permanent residency by 2020. In 2022, Russian President Putin granted him citizenship. The Snowden Incident significantly became a burden for the Russian-U.S. relations.

Navalny Case:

Aleksey Navalny is a Russian lawyer, anti-corruption activist, and politician. He gained global recognition for being one of the most vocal critics of Russian President Vladimir Putin (1999–2008, 2012–). In 2020, while campaigning, he was poisoned with a nerve agent and recovered in Germany. He returned to Russia in January 2021, was arrested, and sentenced to prison. In 2022, he was found guilty of new charges and sentenced to nine years in a strict penal colony.
