Armenia's Foreign Policy
Reiter

Armenia has defined its foreign policy as complementarity, which refers to a strategy that seeks to accommodate the special relationship with Russia, but also to maintain relations with all interested countries and organisations, especially the EU. The objective is to secure regional stability. However, in practice, it is challenging to uphold this multidirectional policy while Armenia is highly dependent on Russia. The situation is made more difficult by the fact that Armenia is a landlocked country and has conflicts with two of its neighbouring countries: Turkey and Azerbaijan. While EU-Armenia relations have gained new momentum since the Velvet Revolution, this cannot hide the fact that Armenia is in Russia's sphere of influence.
