Security and Conflicts

Watch the video to get an understanding about the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

The Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan is the most important security issue in Armenia. While a ceasefire has been negotiated after the Second Nagorno Karabakh War in 2020, the peace is very fragile. In the new status quo, Azerbaijan has control over most of the disputed area. Some of the are regions are still under administration of the Armenian population, backed by Russian troops acting as a peacekeeping force. There have been multiple violent incidents, though, and neither of the peacekeeping forces seem willing to intervene. The Lachin Corridor, connecting Armenia to Nagorno-Karabakh, has been closed by Azerbaijan since July 2023, leaving no way to supply the population with food and medicine. As tensions increase and claims of a new genocide arise, it seems unlikely that the conflict will find an end anytime soon.

According to the United Kingdom Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (n.d.) travel advice, there are no significant additional threats of crime or terrorism in Armenia.
