Armenia is a very homogenic country in terms of ethnicities and religion. This is due to migration and displacements during the first Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Armenian diaspora communities have a big influence on the national politics und society.
Migration and Diaspora
Armenia has a very large diaspora community, estimated at 7-10 million people spread around the world. The countries with the largest Armenian diaspora communities are Russia, the USA and Canada, as well as displaced Armenians in Azerbaijan. This communities shape the politics both abroad and in. Abroad, they influence the image and the foreign policy towards Armenia and raise awareness of Armenian issues. The most important of these issues are the recognition of the Armenian Genocide, sending aid and the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Domestically, these groups play an important role, particularly in the conflict resolution process with Turkey, where many in the diaspora community oppose peace moves towards the country.
There are three distinct phases of emigration. First, the people who fled the country in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, especially during the Armenian Genocide. Second, people who left Armenia during the time of the Soviet Union. The third wave of emigration took place after the collapse of the Soviet Union, mainly due to the difficult economic situation in the 1990s. Migration is not a one-off event, as many families have migrated more than once since leaving Armenia. Sources: Bolsajian (2018); Cohen (2022, pp. 48–56); Simão (2018, pp. 155–157)
